Dear Sir or Madam:
This letter is in regard to your plan to close the low-cost spay and neuter facilities in Alabama. I beg you not to do that. We have fostered many orphaned animals over the years, and we can barely afford to do that with the help that these clinics provide us. We try to get others to help provide veterinary care for these unfortunate animals, but they are in the same shape we are and need help if they are to provide any level of care for them. As it is we see the great majority of animals we come across euthanized in high kill shelters for want of medical care and homes. If you close these clinics, that number can only rise astronomically. That is not a humane thing to do, and it smacks of greed on the part of the veterinarians who support such a move.
I have been told that some vets think these clinics are making money. Recently a friend wanted to get spay/neuter services and vaccinations for some feral cats that were living near his daughter’s school. He called a vet and found the cost to be over $230 per cat—unaffordable for him. The Irondale Spay and Neuter Clinic would provide the service for $50 in these circumstances. There is no way they are making money at that cost. His ability to provide that means there will be fewer homeless and diseased animals in his neighborhood.
Also, the safety of these clinics has been brought into question. I and many of my animal advocate friends have no issue taking our charges there for services or recommending them for others in need. If you look at the records, you will find they are quite safe. The only way I and many others can look at your actions is that is must be an issue of greed on the part of the veterinarians who support closing these clinics. I will shop long and hard to find vets who do not support such a move, and I hope the rest of you suffer financial consequences if you persist in your heartless actions.
(Be sure to include your name and your Alabama address. Letters from outside of Alabama will not be recognized as this is a state issue.)
